Choosing a home sauna is mostly a series of yes-or-no questions about your space, wiring and budget. Answer them in this order and you'll go from 140 saunas to a handful.
- Where will it go? Indoors or outdoors decides which saunas are possible at all. Indoor vs outdoor.
- Which heat do you want? Infrared warms you directly at lower air temperatures; traditional heats the air with a stove and stones. Infrared vs traditional.
- How many people at once? Seat counts assume people sitting close. Space by seat count.
- Will it fit? Measure floor, ceiling and your narrowest door. Fit Check tests every sauna at once.
- What power do you have? 31 saunas we list plug into an outlet; 86 need 240V. 120V vs 240V.
- What's the real budget? Add tax, freight, wiring, a base for outdoor saunas, and electricity. Installation cost and True Cost.
- Then compare. Warranty, wood, top temperature and features. Sauna Matchup puts two to four side by side.
What to read on a listing
- Exterior size and whether clearances are published.
- Connection type: plug, dedicated circuit or hardwired.
- Warranty: cabinet and heater terms, and whether outdoor use changes them.
- What's included: heater, stones, controls, freight.
- Who tested what: an EMF figure from a brand-commissioned test isn't the same as an independent one.
Red flags
- Health promises. A seller can't promise medical results.
- Countdown timers and "only 2 left" banners with no way to check them.
- No published size, warranty or electrical requirement.

Before you buy
Check what your panel needs, installation cost and running cost. Still deciding on a type? Read infrared vs traditional and indoor vs outdoor, or see how the brands compare. A licensed electrician should confirm any wiring before you order.
Questions buyers ask
What's the first thing to decide when buying a sauna?
Where it will go. Indoor and outdoor saunas are built differently, and that one answer rules out about half of the catalog.
What do people forget to budget for?
Wiring, sales tax, freight and, for outdoor saunas, a level base. Our installation cost guide has sourced ranges, and True Cost adds them up.
